Bodegas Bilbaínas specializes in making vintage wines, and is regarded as a leader when it comes to setting wine styles. Some of the winery’s flagships are among the most famed and emblematic wines of the Rioja, foremost of which are Viña Pomal and La Vicalanda.
Changes have been introduced over the years, moving toward deeper-colored red wines, with more hints of fruit and new woody tones, shortening aging times and employing more concentrated juices. Bodegas Bilbaínas has always produced estate wines. This term is in popular use today among winemakers who seek typification and distinction in their wines.
During the mid 90s the winery began a new line of wines whose key distinguishing features of which were their modernity and “high expression.” The first clear manifestation of this innovative spirit was La Vicalanda, a Tempranillo varietal which is named after a small vineyard located on the Viña Pomal estate.

Wines
La Vicalanda Reserva
Tempranillo from Viña Pomal's oldest vines is harvested at the optimum ripeness and carefully processed in the traditional way, with gentle crushing and destemming before being pressed and transferred for fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures. By law, wines given the Reserva designation must spend a combined two years aging in barrel and bottle. La Vicalanda Reserva ages for one year in Bordeaux-style oak barrels. A blend of cooperage of varying ages and origins, including Allier French barrels, is used to add complexity. Once bottled, the wine rests for an additional two years before release.

Viña Pomal Reserva
Carefully selected Tempranillo from Viña Pomal is harvested at optimum ripeness and carefully processed in the traditional way. Viña Pomal Reserva spends 12 months in Bordeaux-style, American oak barrels made of a blend of woods of different ages. In addition, the wine spends a minimum of two years in the bottle in a temperature-controlled environment.

Viña Zaco
Viña Zaco is the rebellious new Rioja from Bodegas Bilbaínas —a Rioja with a contemporary twist. Zaco takes its name from one of the oldest vineyards in Bodegas Bilbaínas in the Rioja Alta. But that's where Zaco's links with the past begin and end. With its abundance of fresh red berries, notes of liquorice and faint undertones of spice, Zaco is the ultimate modern expression of Rioja.
