Recognized as Spain's preeminent wine estate, Raimat champions innovation, sustainability and precision agriculture from the new and exciting Costers del Segre wine region. The symbol of Raimat is the union of the vine (raïm, in the Catalan language) and the hand (má).
In 1914, needing new land to plant vineyards, Manuel Raventós, son of Josep Raventós (who introduced the traditional method for making sparkling wine in Spain) purchased a large, stony desert, 100 miles from Barcelona. A plan to build a canal from the Pyrenees would enable the area to be irrigated. Costers del Segre has one of the lowest average rainfalls in Spain, but with the right irrigation, Raventós knew this could become an advantage. Raimat's metamorphosis from a desert into Spain's most remarkable wine estate took decades. In fact, over time a village and train station evolved on the estate to support an effort that was subsequently formally acknowledged by the government as a significant social achievement for the region. Later collaboration with the University of California - Davis further prepared the estate for the production of world-class wines, and in 1975, some of Spain's first single varietal wines were introduced under the Raimat label.

Light yellow. Citrus fruit and pear skin aromas are complicated by pungent herbs and anise. Firm and linear, offering modestly concentrated pear and orange zest flavors and a hint of white pepper. The dry finish shows a touch of bitterness and good persistence. Drinks very easily but I'm not sure that I'd have guessed this was albarino.

I would personally head for the 2010 Castell de Raimat Chardonnay-Xarel.lo, which is an equal blend of each variety. It has a more complex bouquet with white peach, pear and wax resin notes. The palate is crisp and well-defined, with good acidity and pleasant white peach and lemon sorbet notes fanning out across the finish. This is a well-crafted commercial white Costers del Segre.

Very good, strong recommendation. Pale gold color. Pleasantly fruity, sour, raisiny aromas are fresh, clean. Flavor profile is citrusy fresh, acidic, crisp, edgy, pineapple-like. Aftertase is medium long, fruity ripe, almost juicy, hard candy-like.

Very good, strong recommendation. Pretty maroon color. Aromatic hints of raspberry, bilberry, candle wax, loose leaf tobacco. Bone dry in the mouth, with taste features of dried cherry, figs, black raisins, tomato paste.

Tart cherry, tomato leaf, coffee and smoke flavors mingle in this snappy red. A fresh, rather light beginning gives way to a rich, syrupy finish. The light tannins and balsamic acidity lend focus. Drink now through 2016.

Dark ruby. Ripe cherry and dark berry aromas, plus a note of dark chocolate. The palate offers ripe cherry and plum flavors firmed by gentle, fine-grained tannins. Finishes smooth and slightly warm, with the cherry note repeating.

BEST VALUE. An amped-up red, featuring assertive black cherry and currant flavors, with a creamy vanilla note. Chewy tannins frame this, and lively acidity drives through to the finish. Drink now through 2014.
