This comes out swinging, with bullish berry and prune aromas that hint at being stewy but then pull back. It's saturated and tannic but not rough, with black fruit, chocolate, toast and pepper flavors. Minty and dark, with a licorice note on the finish. Drink now through 2016.

This big red wine has considerable polish, in part, no doubt, because Codorníu Argentina, a subsidiary of the great Spanish wine-producing firm, owns Bodega Septima. This juicy wine manages concentration without going over the edge. The tannins are mild, especially considering the overall size of the wine, which means it's very approachable now and would be a good choice for grilled beef this summer.
The 2011 Malbec has a simple nose of soy-tinged black fruit that has absorbed the American and French oak well. The palate is medium-bodied with touches of burnt toast and rosemary on the entry, coca-tinged tannins and a pleasing, smooth, harmonious finish.
