Viña Pomal wines celebrate the marriage of tradition and modernity.
Richer than the classic Rioja with opulent color, generous fruit and lush on the palate, the estate- grown Viña Pomal wines represent the bold future of Spain's most recognized wine region. Viña Pomal is produced by the historic Bodegas Bilbaínas - the largest vineyard in Rioja Alta, and the largest to have all of its vineyards located in the tiny municipality of Haro. The 600 acres of vineyard holdings of Bodegas Bilbaínas contrast dramatically with the average for the region: One acre. The fourth-largest bodega in Rioja, Bodegas Bilbaínas produces only single-vineyard wines -or viña de finca. This concept, originated by the founders of the winery, is widely used today by winemakers who seek to make their wines distinctive.

This plush red offers ripe cherry and plum flavors, with licorice, vanilla and spice notes backed by orange peel acidity and well-integrated tannins. Harmonious, fresh and lively. Drink now through 2028. 1,000 cases imported

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Opaque midnight black color. This aroma is all about
vines, leaves, brambles, dry soil, chalk, quarry fragrances that are totally and compellingly earthy. Medium richness, moderate tannins form the taste foundation upon which thrive flavors of sesame, plums, black raisins. Finishes medium long, acutely tart, dry, cherry-like.

91 — Ultimate Wine Challenge — February, 2015

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Inky purple color. The vine-like opening aroma is balanced later on by forest floor scents of truffle, moss as well as wild flower and onion grass. Taste is alive with dusty dry flavors of pomegranate, red plum, pomelo, tomato paste, poppy seed. Finishes long, tart, ripe, juicy.

91 — Rioja Report — January, 2018

Always aged in 15-20% new American oak, this is an impressive release for a 2013, a vintage in which many wineries struggled for concentration. Savoury, smoky and blueberry fruity with a nip of supporting tannins. 2018-23

90 — Wine Spectator — May, 2015

Firm and focused, this red offers a core of black cherry, with notes of coffee, licorice, mineral and herb. The tannins are light but supportive, the acidity fresh. Lithe, graceful and lively

There might be more balsamic and cigar-ash aromas in the 2010 Viña Pomal Reserva compared to the selection of 106 barrels. They were bottled separately, but otherwise the wines have a similar profile. I think more time in wood is not better, and the 18 months here is more than enough. In fact, I feel more freshness and drinkability in this wine. It is a good, commercial Rioja.

90 — International Wine Cellar — October, 2010

Bright red. High-pitched red berry and floral aromas, with notes of vanilla and baking spices adding complexity. A silky, understated midweight that offers sweet cherry-vanilla and rose pastille flavors and no rough edges. This seductive wine finishes with very good clarity and a touch of vanillin sweetness. It's balanced to age but is drinking well now.

90 — Wine Spectator — January, 2018

This red shows balance and depth, with black cherry, leafy, licorice and mineral flavors mingling in a silky texture, supported by well-integrated tannins and fresh acidity. A bit reserved, but harmonious. Drink now through 2026. 24,000 cases made

90 — Wine Spectator — December, 2017

This round red is generous and harmonious, delivering lively flavors of black cherry, licorice, loamy earth and spice, supported by light tannins and gentle acidity. Drink now through 2022. 12,000 cases made.

89 — Wine Enthusiast — February, 2015

Focused dark berry, spice and leather aromas form the opening to this nicely made crianza. The palate has a snappy feel, showing firm but controlled tannins. Oak and spice tones hover over berry fruit flavors and last through a juicy finish.

89 — Wine Enthusiast — April, 2014

Punchy, rubbery, full-force aromas of black fruits, graphite and bacon are loud and oaky. This feels stocky and full, with blackberry, cherry, fig and prune flavors. On the finish, vanilla and coconut take over a very good, ripe Rioja.

89 — Wine Enthusiast — February, 2013

Dill, vanilla, tobacco, earth and light red-fruit aromas comprise the classic nose. The palate feels tight and in good shape, while a mild berry flavor comes topped with touches of cardamom, cinnamon and nutmeg, expressing Rioja in every way. Elegant and balanced; drink now.
