Viña Zaco is the rebellious new Rioja from Bodegas Bilbaínas. It is a groundbreaking, modern and distinctive wine that tramples convention, arouses the senses and bewitches the palate.
Viña Zaco's launch in 2005 was a new step forward in redefining the profile of what has traditionally represented a classic Rioja winery like Bodegas Bilbaínas. The success of its accredited Reserva wines doesn't get in the way of the winery's ability to create other unique and excellent wines, in line with new wine-drinking trends. With Viña Zaco, Bodegas Bilbaínas has created a wine that seeks out the maximum fruit expression of Tempranillo grapes. Its fresh and fruity aromas make Viña Zaco a groundbreaking modern Rioja wine that shakes up the traditional aging process. In the words of our enologist Diego Pinilla, in Viña Zaco "everything focuses on the fruit. This is why we don't categorize it as Crianza or Reserva, we just make it and bottle it."

Garnet color. Rich aromas and flavors of coconut custard, spiced cherries, dried apricot, and buttery nuts with a supple, vibrant, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and a stimulating, medium-length finish evoking suggestions of chocolate craisin and vanilla toffee with chewy tannins. A lush, chewy, appetizing Rioja. Drink now through 2017.

The 2011 Vina Zaco changed labels and profile to a more modern style a few years ago and displays a darker shade of cherry color, ripe notes of red and black berries, flowers and a meaty palate where the wood is perfectly integrated with the fruit, which finally feels more classical than what the label makes you think. It is very good value. Drink 2014-2017.

This red shows focus and good density, with ripe fruit flavors of black cherry and plum accented with toast and coffee, all supported by well-integrated tannins. Leafy and minerally accents linger on the finish. Drink now through 2016.

88 — Wine Spectator — September, 2010

This polished red delivers black cherry, espresso and mineral flavors in a silky texture over firm tannins. Leafy and floral notes linger. Not powerful, but has intensity. Drink now through 2014.
